We saw a moose running across a field in New Vineyard. Behind the moose the sun set, a ball of red, the mountains hazy in the distance. Unfortunately, I don’t have a photo. Fortunately, we got delicious burritos in Farmington. Finally some good Mexican food ’round these parts. Getting up early to play tennis tomorrow. I think we’ll skip the beer this time. While beer and tennis go together like well, beer and whiffle ball, I need to cut back on the heat stroke inducing activities.

Maine State Republican Convention
May 3rd, 2008 · No Comments
After finding appropriate clothing in my closet (what do you wear to a GOP convention?) driving an hour to Augusta, and sitting through mind-numbing speeches I voted for the Ron Paul slate of delegates. District 1 got a single Ron Paul delegate in. My district, number 2, got all of zero. The at-large delegates replicated the McCain list. Party unity won out over people getting the candidate they wanted (McCain had very little support in the caucuses, Romney was the big winner.)
Planned Parenthood and a Maine family planning group both had booths just inside the entrance. I happily wore an I Support Planned Parenthood button. One “Christian” called me a communist and asked my husband if he was happy being married to me because I’d probably become a prostitute. One of the Christian Civic League followers bitched about Planned Parenthood being allowed in, complaining of the “big tent” philosophy. Guess what Heath followers the Republican party wasn’t always about anti-abortion and making sure gays don’t get married. [Read more →]

I’m voting Street and Company my favorite restaurant in Portland - and not just because those Limoncello drinks are the perfect drunky dessert.

The trail is woodsy mellow, a couple waterfalls along the way, steep section to reach the first viewpoint. Dog friendly for friendly dogs.

Animal, Vegetable, Miracle - Goat, Kale, Farm Shares
April 6th, 2008 · No Comments
With five feet of snow on my sometimes garden I started reading Animal, Vegetable, Miracle. I’ll read anything Barbara Kingsolver writes, but the whole preaching to the choir thing applies here. We rarely go to the grocery store in the summer, hitting the farmers’ markets instead. Admittedly, we’re weaker in the winter, giving into the temptations of junk food and tropical fruit. Our freezer always has a variety of local meat in it. This fall we got a pig, two turkeys and three chickens from Island Farm in Avon and a goat from Phillips. We’ll finish the meat just about when the Farmington Farmers’ Market starts up next month. Then maybe we’ll buy some rabbits (sorry Sadie, not for pets.)

Snowmobiling - Kingfield to Eustis
March 29th, 2008 · No Comments
My husband wanted to travel the backroads from home to camp, on the snowmobile. He told me it would take 1.5 hours. We saddled up late morning to enjoy the midday sunshine. Heading out on the bumpy New Portland trails my frustrated driver talked about turning around. I ushered him on from my backseat perch, told him the trail would be fine once we got to Kingfield. It was. We stopped just beyond Kingfield to sip some tea in the sun and gaze at Mt. Abra(ha)m.

Kibby Mountain - before the windfarm
March 27th, 2008 · No Comments
Like everyone else around here I have summer on my mind…

Last summer we climbed Kibby Mountain on my birthday - great to have an August birthday in Maine. The trailhead is not far from our camp on Big Jim Pond. From parts of the pond we can see Kibby.
